In July I spent five days in Katmai National Park photographing bears. This huge area of wilderness bordering the Shelikof Strait in western Alaska contains one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in the world and sees few visitors each year. The fortunate combination of good weather and lighting made for a magical photographic experience. I've put together a selection of my favourite images in four pages which can be viewed here.

A couple of hours at the National Botanic Gardens produced some interesting flower and plant close-ups. However my favourite image was the last shot I took. Looking back from the entrance gate I spotted a family picnicking under the huge dome of the greenhouse which seemed to be a mixture of tranquillity and the ominous. Other images from this shoot can be found here: 1  2  3  4

I thought I'd close the year with a new image from a new camera. The title page image was taken on a Canon Ixus 65 bought as a replacement for my first digital camera, a Canon S20 many images from which are still posted on this site. The new Ixus allows me to still carry a camera at times when I don't want the weight and bulk of an SLR, but with a bit of work in Photoshop, produces some great images.

When designing this website I have always aimed to make the content easily available to anyone no matter what the speed of their connection to the web. This means that image sizes have to be kept reasonably small (around 50-60Kb) so that they can be viewed over a dial-up connection. With the increasing availability of broadband I have decided to open a new site which will allow me to share images at higher quality that allowed by the restrictions of dial-up downloads. This new site will contain a mixture of new work not available on this site together with high-definition versions of some of my favourite images from nickgallery. The new site nickgallery HD can be found here.

Over the past few years many hundreds of photographers have downloaded the Photoshop infrared conversion actions available on this site. I've recently developed some new actions which take alternative approaches to the conversion of colour images to mimic the look of monochrome infrared film. A full description of the new Photoshop CS actions and the link for downloading the actions can be found here.

Mixed weather and high winds limited the photographic opportunities during a week in Pembrokeshire, however I managed to grab a few colour and texture studies including Shattered Slate featured on the title page.
